In the Loop - Charlie Morris recipient of 2022 Greg Koontz Scholarship

Greg Koontz gives an aerobatic instructor scholarship annually in Memory of Bobby Younkin. The scholarship aims to promote and improve the aerobatic instruction field by offering a CFI an aerobatic instructor course.

The 2022 scholarship recipient was Charlie Morris. Charlie was chosen based on his aerobatic experience and his dedication to aerobatic instruction as a full-time career. He is a fourth-generation pilot in a family that has always flown taildraggers!

Charlie’s love of flying started at a very young age riding with his Papaw and his dad in the family 7AC Champ. Then at the age of 14 with the encouragement of family friend Josef Schroeder, Charlie began lessons in gliders and did his first solo flight in a glider. He then earned his private pilot glider at age 16. He also soloed the family Champ at age 16. At age 17 he earned his private pilot single engine land certificate.

At age 18 and just out of high school Charlie joined the military and spent 6 years in the Army as a UAV operator (drone pilot). Charlie has continued his flight training and now holds a commercial license, instrument rating, and flight instructor rating.

In September 2022, Greg announced that he was partnering with Charlie Morris to head up all of Greg's tailwheel training. "Because of such high demand for quality tailwheel instruction, and my knowledge of Mr. Morris’s success at providing tailwheel training at the high standards we require, he will do all our tailwheel instruction," said Greg on his Facebook page. www.facebook.com/greg.koontz.37.
Charlie gives tailwheel instruction out of his home airport at Vine Grove Airport in Kentucky.
