GILES HENDERSON MEMORIAL CHALLENGE
From the IAC chapter 61 website: https://chapters.eaa.org/iac61/slo-contest
A comparatively large number of pilots (28) either pre-registered or indicated they were going to attend the contest this year. Unfortunately, many of them were unable to attend due to COVID, mechanical difficulties, or weather. We had excellent weather on Thursday and Friday when competitors arrived and practiced in the box. Saturday had rain and mist throughout ,much of the day and we were only able to complete the Advanced and Unlimited Known flights. On Sunday, the forecast was much better, but the actual weather took longer than expected to improve to competition/waiver minimums and we were only able to complete the Sportsman and Intermediate Known flights. There were no Primary category pilots this year. In spite of the weather, those that attended enjoyed friendship, a banquet, and a single flight contest with excellent weather to begin the journey home.

IAC CH 78 - the Minnesota Cloud Dancers hosted their annual Doug Yost Challenge August 7-8 in Spencer, Iowa. They had a great showing with 28 competitors flying three flights each over the two day period. (Except Unlimited who were able to get in 2 flights.
Taking a minute out here to plug the IAC Achievement Award program - there were 16 pilots that earned their Stars Patch (achievement award at a contest)! There was a lot of great high scoring flights. Two collegiate teams; University of North Dakota and Metropolitan State University Denver comprised over half of those flying in the Primary category for a total of 10 competitors. Eight out of ten Primary competitors finished with an overall score above 80%!

The Michigan Aerobatic Open kicked off the season for the MidAmeria Region. Considering the summer thunderstorms moving through the area and adjacent states, the contest was lucky to have a beautiful day on the Saturday, July 10, of the contest to get in two flights for everyone. (A couple did have to break off early and hightail it home before they got locked out.)
A big thanks goes out to Contest Director Dan Unger and his wife Mary for all their hard work and dedication to not only organizing but preventing the contest from cancellation. There were some airport use issues to over come, but Dan persisted with the help and support of Valley Aero Club members who are based at the James Clements Municipal Airport, Bay City where the contest was held. Special thanks to Mary for coming through as chef for the delicious barbequed steaks and fixin's for the award banquet when the catering fell through. Mary - everything was delicious!!
There were four first-time competitors at this contest including Julia Harrington who placed first in Primary with an overall score of 87.93%. She was also awarded the Grass Roots medallion and the Highest Scoring Decathlon medal. Julia just purchased her Decathlon in March, but she's been involved in aerobatics ever since she saw Patty Wagstaff perform in 1999. See Julia's Pilot Profile: Julia Harrington pilot profile.pdf
(photo right; Hugo Ritzenthaler, VP IAC88 with Julia Harrington and two other first-time competitors 2nd and 3rd place finishers in Sportsman; Tim Poe and Timothy Taylor.)
First place winner in the Sportsman category was Michael Hoy, flying his Monosport 360. So far this year Mike has been flying in the South Central region and is currently sitting in tentative second place in Sportsman for that region. He just needs one more contest there to qualify for the So. Central Region.
Normally found in the Southeast Region, Jerry Esquenazi flew his Extra 300S up from Georgia to win both the Known and Freestyle flights to secure first place in the category.
It was a pleasure to see Mitchell Wild back in the Wild's Extra 300S since he joined the AirForce in 2016. Mitch qualified for the 2016 U.S. Advanced Aerobatic Team at the 2015 U.S. Nationals. He finished in first place in the Advanced category with a score of 87.21%.
